fsc_ralst: Yes, stay here for non-English fandoms
fsc_ralst: Unfortunately, lysachan is having computer problems, so might not be able to join us
Liberty Stewart: by non english you mean foreign language or outside US?
BetweenLove_n_Hate: staying. wondering if anyone’s seen Aimee and jaguar
Williegilreath: I love pussy
fsc_ralst: Non-English language
shesgottaread: saw Aimee and Jaguar years ago
Ceridwyn2: So, maybe to get the panel outside the US, chat about non-English Language fandoms like Hospital Central, Terra Los Lobos
Gin Akasarahsmom: sounds familiar
yurianimeotaku: @ralst Both film and tv?
Liberty Stewart: @BLnH I did. The blond in that movie is even in the infamous Hitler says clips from Uprising
Ceridwyn2: saw Aimee & Jaguar years ago, have it on dvd
fsc_ralst: Yes, both film and TV
fsc_ralst: I take it most of you watch non-English programs? possibly on YouTube?
Ceridwyn2: I caught on to Hospital Central, a Spanish soap, set in Madrid. Had a long running lesbian storylines
Gin Akasarahsmom: YouTube.. and Netflix
yurianimeotaku: @ralst Yes
BetweenLove_n_Hate: I watch some non-english movies on Logo
Gin Akasarahsmom: I don’t get LOGO anymore… for a while..
fsc_ralst: Do you find that the YouTube channels, dedicated to certain pairings, that include just their scenes, makes it easier to get into a pairing? Rather than watching the whole show, I mean
Ceridwyn2: HC has seasons 12-19 of the Maca/Esther, Maca/Vero, Esther/Bea storylines on the http://mitele.es/series-online/hospital-central
Gin Akasarahsmom: Viacom is still negotiating with DirecTV
Liberty Stewart: Only other option at the moment is either this, Greys or Riz & Isles. I don’t watch the latter two so I guess I’m staying
Ceridwyn2: They also have Terra los Lobos on http://mitele.es/series-online
yurianimeotaku: @ralst Yes. I start with their scenes to see if there is really any chemisty or if the person has their ‘goggles’ cranked up to 11.
Ceridwyn2: Mitele is currently working on putting up more previous seasons of HC. When I started checking out the site, they only had seasons 17-19, now they have back to S12.
Ceridwyn2: full eps, which are anywhere from 1h10 min – 1h 25 min, and no ads
fsc_ralst: Hospital Central is a good example of a lesbian couple being treated just like all the other couples on a show. Big storylines etc.
yurianimeotaku: I don’t know if it was just me, but I thought the doctor from HC had more chemistry with the blonde doctor, than the nurse.
BetweenLove_n_Hate: I like seeing scenes with ALL of the characters. It’s nice just to see the couple together but also nice to see them interacting with others so you get a better feel for them as a whole
Ceridwyn2: They did have some good chem, but I did like Maca/Esther, since I started watching it at the beginning, so I saw that relationship grow
fsc_ralst: Do you think only seeing scenes can hamper people thinking about writing for a pairing?
yurianimeotaku: @ralst I started with Pepa and Silvia
Ceridwyn2: I also really liked the interactions with Maca & Claudia
Liberty Stewart: next up is something called ARG. What’s that exactly?
Ceridwyn2: which were non-canon, but their onscreen chemistry as friends was fantastic
fsc_ralst: Yes, it was good to see the lesbian characters also having strong, platonic relationships
BetweenLove_n_Hate: @Ralst I guess it depends on what your writing. If it’s only with the couple then it should be alright but I like well rounded fic with ALL the characters and multi-levels ingrained in a story so that means interaction with others. But if you only watch some scenes you don’t get the feel for those other characters
yurianimeotaku: @ralst I start with the scenes and then go searching for the show with subtitles, since I don’t speak several languages.
Alkmaion: @Liberty: Alternative Reality Game, if I read it correctly
Ceridwyn2: I think to some degree it can hamper, because you get much more when you see how other characters react around them or talk of the paired characters when they’re not on screen
Ceridwyn2: I started to learn Spanish with watching HC.
Liberty Stewart: @Alk: Sounds interesting and I’m all for AUs
fsc_ralst: So we should use the clips as a starting point?
Ceridwyn2: Yeah. There’s still quite a few up that have subtitles, but there are a number that were taken down of HC of seasons 14-16
yurianimeotaku: @ralst I started with Jemma clips and then watched the entire show.
BetweenLove_n_Hate: @ralst, I think we should use them as a starting point and branch out more.
Alkmaion: @ralst: only for the couple, not the world around it
Ceridwyn2: I also watched Los Hombres de Paco for Silvia/Pepa but was gutted by their exit. At least HC’s Maca/Esther had their happy ending exit story
fsc_ralst: We do run the risk of the clips being taken down, as with HC and Emma/Jenny, and that can really impact on a fandom
yurianimeotaku: I wish it were easier to find subbed (I hate dubbed) shows. PrudeTube pulls them rather quickly.
fsc_ralst: Silvia/Pepa broke my heart, but I loved them
Gin Akasarahsmom: sigh… they were great
Gin Akasarahsmom: poor Pepa
yurianimeotaku: Pepsi had some serious chemistry.
fsc_ralst: Does anyone else feel slightly intimidated at the idea of writing for characters you cannot understand? (language wise)
yurianimeotaku: @ralst Not really.
Alsike: It was more of writing the culture that I couldn’t understand.
Alkmaion: No, the mmoment I write I actually beyond that
Alsike: There are so many assumptions that we make with setting and attitude, it made it hard.
Ceridwyn2: yeah, no kidding. With HC, Esther left in ep 5, Maca in ep 10, but they both make a reappearance in ep 20 of season 19
fsc_ralst: Maybe culture is a better way of putting it
Alsike: I wrote Anime fic, and trying to figure out what it would be like to come out in Japan, I just couldn’t do it. I had no idea.
Ceridwyn2: No, not really. I just wrote two HC stories, but my problem with getting started writing them was where to start because there was so much canon storyline for them
fsc_ralst: One thing I love about many of the foreign language shows is that they allow the characters to show passion, and that’s not always somehting you get with American network TV
yurianimeotaku: @ralst I’ve read yuri supposedly taking place in Japan, but the references are all American.
Ceridwyn2: It’s rare that we have that much canon story (11 seasons worth)
Ceridwyn2: We don’t get that on North American tv
fsc_ralst: Yes, if the references are wrong it just pulls you out of a story
Alsike: @yuri – so much of it!
yurianimeotaku: American LGBT programming seriously lacks.
Ceridwyn2: Pepa/Siliva had plenty of passion.
Alkmaion: I really dislike too many americanisms in anime fanfic, though too much of the suffix stuff can be a killer too
Alsike: Though it’s a lot like a fic set in college, when it’s obvious that the writer is very much still in high school
yurianimeotaku: @Alsike That one kills me too.
fsc_ralst: If you had to choose, what’s your favourite pairing? (foreign language)
Ceridwyn2: I find HC probably easier to watch than other Spanish stuff, because as a nurse, I understand the medical/nursing terminology.
Ceridwyn2: And once you get used to the possessive nouns being tacked on to verbs, it also is easier to distinguish
Alkmaion: I liked the one of ‘Verbotene Liebe’, Miriam/Rebekka
Gin Akasarahsmom: omg… I ADORE Charlie/Stella
Gin Akasarahsmom: lol
Gin Akasarahsmom: didn’t last long enough… but.. it was nice while it was going
fsc_ralst: Charlie/Stella? O
Gin Akasarahsmom: yep… before Carla and Stella got together
Ceridwyn2: The other attraction to HC is that the characters are adults, and by that, mostly in their 30s, so it’s much easier for me to identify with
fsc_ralst: The first time I saw a Stella clip, she was standing next to Charlie, and I thought Charlie was her grandmother… the idea of pairing them after that really didn’t work for me
Ceridwyn2: probably also why I was able to relate more to GL’s Otalia than AMC’s BAM (Bianca/Maggie or Bianca/Marissa) pairings
Gin Akasarahsmom: lol..
Gin Akasarahsmom: I see ralst
Gin Akasarahsmom: that would be a problem to overcome
fsc_ralst: Yeah, I think the age of the characters can definitely have an impact
fsc_ralst: Gin – I was ‘OMG’ when I read they were getting together, before I read on and discovered they weren’t related
Gin Akasarahsmom: hehehe
yurianimeotaku: @ralst One of my favs is Kerstin and Juliette from "Marienhof"
Alsike: Now that’s a storyline that would have to be handled with care.
Ceridwyn2: Mind you, I could relate a whole lot more to Lip Service’s bunch of Scottish lesbian characters than I ever could with The L Word’s bunch. And they were about the same agies
fsc_ralst: I find the new Rebecca pairing on Verbotene Liebe somewhat irksome, because they changed Rebecca’s face (actress) and the new M does appear to know how to kiss women
yurianimeotaku: @Ceridwyn I think Frankie was WAY hotter than Shane.
fsc_ralst: @yuri they were cute
Ceridwyn2: oh hell yea
Ceridwyn2: hot doc & hot cop. thud
fsc_ralst: Silvia/Pepa <– favourite pairing
Alkmaion: qralst: I only found the clips and don´t watch the sow, even if it is my native language(German), so that is new to me
Ceridwyn2: I remember at the time I got into HC was with Hysteria74 & lysachan
yurianimeotaku: @Ceridwyn Sexy all the way!!
Alkmaion: @ralst. sorry
yurianimeotaku: @Ceridwyn Episode 6 of Series 2 was AWESOME.
fsc_ralst: @Alk – I think all the clips are on YTube
Ceridwyn2: The only downside for me is that the Spaniards are like freaky speedy with their speech.
Alkmaion: yeah, i swa them, both actresses had a bit of chemistry
fsc_ralst: Yes, they talk fast
yurianimeotaku: @ralst At least they don’t mumble…LOL.
fsc_ralst: Julia/Marianna – I can’t remember the country now, but South American – speak very slowly, by contrast, which was very confusing at the start after having taught myself to read fast for Spanish language shows
Ceridwyn2: It doesn’t help sometimes that Maca sometimes sounds like she mumbles, though it could just be her intonation
fsc_ralst: But Maca is so pretty I never notice if she mumbles
Ceridwyn2: My problem is I’ve read just about all the English-language HC fics out there, and my Spanish reading comprehension is not strong enough yet to read the Spanish language M/E fics
Alsike: Translate them! It’s good for you!
fsc_ralst: How do you generally find out about new non-English pairings? If they’re not from your neck of the woods?
Alsike: I’ve been trying that with Sei/Youko fics in Japanese.
yurianimeotaku: @ralst Either "After Ellen" or "PrudeTube."
Alsike: P&P of course.
fsc_ralst: Yes, someone translate them, then we can all read *g*
Alkmaion: Chance plays a big part
fsc_ralst: @Whedonist – jump right in
Ceridwyn2: I have done for some. but the flow of the Spanish language is a bit different than with English,
yurianimeotaku: @Alsike I LOVE that non-canon pairing.
Alsike: It’s so canon in my brain.
yurianimeotaku: I’ve read some really good Marimite fics on FFN…as strange as that sounds.
Alsike: Where else do you go?
Ceridwyn2: Oh, Ralst, now that the two fic I’ve written for HC was released for posting from the FSAC, you can add them to P&P website. Do you want me to email them to you?
Alsike: The Heian AU is amazing.
Alsike: have you read that one?
fsc_ralst: @cer yes please
fsc_ralst: Can we think of a better way to spreading the news about these pairings/shows?
yurianimeotaku: @Alsike No, I haven’t. Where is it posted?
Ceridwyn2: Okay, will do, once the panel is over. managed to kick myself out of chat earlier by accident
Ceridwyn2: On the P&P site, maybe a non-English language feature / month?
Alsike: It is tragically unfinished, and mostly Sachiko/Yumi, but it’s massive and brilliant
yurianimeotaku: @Alsike I’ll have to check it out. I haven’t been reading over there, since they started censoring the work.
Alkmaion: From the Heian aera?
Ceridwyn2: I’ve been chattering about HC on Facebook & Twitter freqsiuently in the past few month
fsc_ralst: @Ceridwyn – I can arrange one for September
Ceridwyn2: sounds good. I also have a few posts on my LJ & one on my celtic-dragon blogs
Alsike: Here it is: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3932220/1/The_Sorceresss_Heart
yurianimeotaku: FFN has started pulling any work they deem outside their new guidelines.
Alsike: It’s sorceresses in Heian Kyo
fsc_ralst: I think, as with most fandoms, if you can get one or two good people into a fandom and writing, it can just take off
Alkmaion: Thanks Alsike.
Alsike: Yeah, I went in and copied this one and made it an E-book just in case.
Ceridwyn2: Ack the Non-US fandoms is not til 1am ET/2am AT. I’ll be at work. I don’t know if I’ll be able to make it
fsc_ralst: @ Ceridwyn – that’s for English language fandoms
yurianimeotaku: What’s the difference between "Non-Eng Lang" and "Non-US Fandoms?"
Ceridwyn2: Yeah, but since I’ve gotten back into watching Bad Girls, that would be the one
fsc_ralst: British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand etc. fandoms
Ceridwyn2: Non english language – means anything not in English, from any country. Non-US is anything outside the US, English or no
Ceridwyn2: finished S4 of Bad Girls on Thursday
fsc_ralst: What about crossover potential? I’ve seen a few Los Hombres de Paco and Hospital Central crossovers, do you think it’s easier
Ceridwyn2: That’s more easy to do with LHDP & HC as they’re set present day, whereas Terra Los Lobos is historically set, so no way to really cross-over unless you had a serious AU going on
fsc_ralst: as the main Spanish shows, they kind of go togehter in my head, in a way ER and Castle never would
Ceridwyn2: As in you could have Pepa & Silva end up at HC because of a shooting or injury
fsc_ralst: Anyone know when Terra Los Lobos is coming back? They were cute together
Ceridwyn2: not sure. I know the mitele.es/series-online has the first two seasons of full eps, but I don’t know about another series yet
fsc_ralst: i was hoping for some Sisters and Lady-Love Vs The Nuns fic from that show, but I haven’t found any
yurianimeotaku: @ralst REALLY??
fsc_ralst: Erm, not pairing sisters and nuns
yurianimeotaku: @ralst Whew! I thought you wanted to read a pairing.
Ceridwyn2: Another non-canon HC pairing that might have worked was Monica & Lola
Alsike: I’m in favor of well-developed prostitute characters. Hos is Terra Los Lobos in that resepct?
fsc_ralst: @yuri – No, no, no, no, no and no *g*
Alsike: *respect (jeez)
fsc_ralst: I’ve only seen the clips, so it’s hard to tell
yurianimeotaku: @ralst Although…the Mother Superior definitely has some serious internalized homophobia going on.
yurianimeotaku: Plus, she’d make one heck of a dom…in an AU.
fsc_ralst: I think the Moter Superior had her own little daddy’s-whore back in the day
yurianimeotaku: @ralst I agree.
fsc_ralst: Anyone else seen Kyss Mig? A Swedish film
Ceridwyn2: I’m hoping to go see "Farewell, My Queen" when I go to NYC in a couple weeks as I don’t think it will ever show up here.
Ceridwyn2: That’s French and subtitled
fsc_ralst: In that case, I recommend it, but will refrain from giving spoilers – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1859522/
Ceridwyn2: I have read the book its based on.
yurianimeotaku: @ralst I’ve read reviews comparing it to "Imagine Me and You."
fsc_ralst: Is that the Marie Antoinned one?
fsc_ralst: @yuri kinda Imagine Me and You with Sex
yurianimeotaku: @ralst After watching the Swedish version of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," I’m a bit skittish about Swedish films.
Alsike: ANd that is what i call a good advertisement
fsc_ralst: yuri don’t worry, it’s nothing like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Ceridwyn2: the yt link is for the Farewell, My Queen movie
fsc_ralst: @Alsike absolutely
Ceridwyn2: the great thing about the film is that it was actually filmed at Versailles
fsc_ralst: Kyss Mig trailer – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qL0up-CNCHg
fsc_ralst: Oh, TWO MINUTES TO GO
fsc_ralst: Any recommendations? Fics or shows or films?
Ceridwyn2: it’s too bad that lysachan couldn’t make it. that would have been fun.
fsc_ralst: Yes, she always knows the best shows
Ceridwyn2: and she did live in Spain for a while while doing her degree, if I’m not mistaken
fsc_ralst: Thanks to everyone for a good panel and lots of lovely links to check out on Monday
Ceridwyn2: what is ARG, Ralst?
shesgottaread: thanks for the panel!
yurianimeotaku: ty ralst
